Whitfords Nodes Hillarys to Burns Beach Bike Trail

The Hillarys to Burns Beach Bike Trail extends north from Hillarys Boat Harbour / Whitfords Nodes and is approximately a 22km return bike ride that winds along the magnificent far northern Perth coastline. There are lots of places to stop and relax or explore along the way, so you can choose to ride up and back within a couple of hours or make a whole days adventure of it!

Whitfords Nodes Bike Trail

Whitfords Nodes Hillarys

I started my ride at the southern Whitfords Nodes carpark. There is also parking at the north side of Hillarys Boat Harbour and the main Whitfords Nodes carpark. Finding somewhere to park in close proximity to the bike trail shouldn’t be a problem.

Whitfords Nodes Park features a large open space with kids playground, picnic facilities, water fountains, toilets and the Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub that includes 145 steps up to a lookout and outdoor gym equipment. This is a great place to get in a variety of exercise before starting your bike ride if you are keen to get the full active experience.

Pinnaroo Point

The first point along this ride is Pinnaroo Point. Here you can find a grassy reserve, with picnic shelters, toilets and bike racks to park your bike. Just before Pinnaroo Point is the Animal Exercise Beach carpark where you can also find a toilet block and on weekends in the warmer months you can often find a coffee van here too.

Mullaloo Beach

Before you reach Mullaloo Beach there is another toilet block on the left of the bike trail at the Whitfords Beach entry. Just off the bike trail near the toilet block is a track to the Whitfords Beach carpark where you can often find a Yahava Koffee Van and just a little way up from here is the Kallaroo Beach carpark where you can often find the James Bean Coffee Van (there’s no shortage of coffee stops on this ride).

As you ride into Mullaloo Beach you’ll see a bike repair station on your right alongside the kids playground. The bike repair station includes basic bike repair tools and compressed air with a pressure gauge.

Mullaloo Beach is a great place to stop for coffee with Swell overlooking the beach, Boardies Kiosk (open seasonally). Across the road is Dome and Grafton Street for coffee and if it’s something colder you are after you can pull up at the Mullaloo Beach Hotel to enjoy a beer, wine, spirit or cocktail overlooking the ocean.

This is a good spot to enjoy a swim or a picnic with toilets, BBQs, picnic tables and two kids playgrounds. A bike rack is located near the carpark at the front of Swell, to park and lock your bike until you are ready to get on with the rest of your ride.

Mullaloo Beach Lookout

On your way from Mullaloo Beach to Ocean Reef Boat Harbour it’s worth taking a short detour to your left to the Mullaloo Beach Lookout. This is a beautiful lookout over Mullaloo Beach and Ocean Reef Boat Harbour and with a little picnic shelter here too it’s a nice spot to stop for a packed snack and a cold drink.

Before the lookout at the Key West Mullaloo carpark is a toilet block (note; this toilet block was under construction during this ride October 2020).

Ocean Reef Boat Harbour

There’s not much to see and do at Ocean Reef Boat Harbour (until the $120m upgrade is completed post 2022 anyway).  It’s a nice little ride past the boat ramp and there is a toilet block here. If you feel like a stop there is small shady grassed area and a set of kids swings. The bike path gets a bit hazy through here but if you ride back up towards the main road (away from the beach) you’ll find the main pathway up to Iluka and Burns Beach.

Iluka Foreshore Park and Lookout

Next stop along the way is the beautiful Iluka Foreshore Park. Here there is a kids playground, picnic tables, BBQs, toilets and it’s a nice spot for a swim, with good access to the beach. On weekends in the mornings you can find the Iluka Foreshore Park Food Truck serving up yummy breakfast delights.

There is also a fabulous lookout here with a set of stairs no active person can resist knocking out a few sets of. Park your bike at the bottom of the stairs and enjoy this beautiful park and the amazing views from the lookout along the way.

Burns Beach

Destination Burns Beach. As you roll into the little beach side town you’ll see the Burns Beach Sunsets Village and Sistas Cafe right along the beach front coastal pathway. You can also find the Burns Beach Twilight Market here Wednesdays evenings (5-8.30pm) October to April, so you could enjoy an early dinner before riding back or maybe start at Burns Beach and grab dinner from the food trucks at the end. The Burns Beach foreshore also features a kids playground, picnic tables, BBQs, toilets and plenty of bike racks to park and lock up your bike.

On your return ride you’ll enjoy a different perspective of the beautiful coastline. This ride is challenging in parts with several hilly sections but overall it’s an enjoyable ride, with a range of winding path ways and straight sections with views of the coastline and many viewing areas. The views are so stunning you won’t be able to resist stopping along the way to take in all it’s beauty. It’s a shared pathway most the way along, and it’s a popular trail so make sure you keep left and be aware of other cyclists and pedestrians.

You could do this ride straight up and back in a couple of hours or grab a few friends and make a day of it with some coffee (or beer and wine), picnic and swim stops along the way. Do it during the day and stop for lunch or make it a late evening ride on a hot summer’s evening and stop somewhere for dinner (don’t forget the food trucks Wednesday nights at the Burns Beach Twilight Markets during the warmer months, the Iluka Foreshore Food Truck on weekends in the morning for brunch and of course there are lots of dining options back at Hillarys Boat Harbour).
