How long is the ride?

The return bike ride from Deep Water Point to Applecross Jetty is 9.2km long. There is a shared pathway the whole way along and it’s mostly flat, so it’s a good ride for all ages and fitness levels.

Where is the best place to start?

You can start at either end, but I liked starting at Deep Water Point so I could enjoy a coffee at the Dome Cafe at the end. However the parking here can be difficult here, particularly on the weekend, so starting at the Applecross Jetty is another option. There are a couple of small carparks here.

Where can I stop for something to eat or drink along the way?

There are multiple dining options on this ride.

  • Dome Deep Water Point (at the suggested start point) is a licensed cafe that is open daily from early until late.
  • The Raffles Hotel is located near the Canning Bridge and is also open daily from lunch until midnight and is a nice stop for a coldy or two.
  • Bluewater Grill and Kiosk is located at around the half way point and can be accessed with your bike via a pathway that leads up to the elevated Heathcoate Reserve.

All of these options offer delicious food and drink options as well as beautiful dining with stunning views of the Swan River.

What else is there to see along the way?

As well as beautiful views of the city and Swan River, there are some artworks to stop and appreciate along the way. Under the Canning Bridge is an un-commissioned art gallery and it’s absolutely worth parking up your bike to appreciate the artworks here. It does extend to the other side of the bridge so you may want to take a little detour to the other side of the bridge to check it all out.

At the end of this ride at the Applecross Jetty is a wings sculpture, perfect for grabbing that insta-worthy photo on your ride.

Is there somewhere to stop for a BBQ or picnic along the way?

Take your pick. From grassy foreshores to sandy beaches, there are so many beautiful spots to stop along the way.  BBQs are located at both ends of this ride at Deep Water Point and Applecross Jetty and also at Heathcoate Reserve.

At the base of the Heathcoate Reserve access there is a viewing area with some information about the local history and ecology.

I also recommend riding a little past the Applecross Jetty. There is a boardwalk that’s wide enough for walkers and bikes, that literally takes you over the river’s edge.

Of course the views of the river and the city all the way around are absolutely stunning too.

Is there somewhere to stop to go to the toilet along the way?

Public toilets are located at Deep Water Point, Applecross Jetty and Heathcoate Reserve.

Can I bring my dog along?

There is one off the lead dog exercise area on this trail.  It’s located to the west of Jeff Joseph Reserve and is well sign posted. Note: dogs are not allowed off pathways at Deepwater Point, are not allowed at Heathcoate Reserve and are also not permitted off pathways at Jeff Joseph Reserve / Applecross Jetty. There is also a restricted section in between the Canning Bridge and the South Perth Yacht Club where dogs are permitted on the lead.

Dogs are permitted in the outside dining area at Dome Deep Water Point. Dogs are not allowed at The Raffles or Bluewater Grill & Kiosk.
