The 5 Best Places To See Amazing Wildflowers In Perth (Without Leaving The City)

 

WA boasts over 12,000 species of wildflowers, which makes it the best place in the world to see a variety of wildflowers. While you can take a drive out of town to see spectacular wildflower displays, you can also find amazing wildflowers right here in the suburbs of Perth too. All of these Perth wildflowers locations are no more than 30 mins drive from Perth city.

September – November each year is Perth wildflowers season and this is the best time to see them.

Where are the best places to see wildflowers in Perth?

Kings Park Botanic Gardens

Distance: The Botanic Gardens walk is 7km long in total but the best displays are at the beginning of the walk and can be seen in the first few hundred metres.
Accessibility: Walk Only | No Bikes Allowed | Suitable for Prams or Wheelchairs
Dogs: Permitted on the Lead
Facilities: Cafe/Restaurant & Toilets Nearby | Free Parking

Kings Park is the best way to see wildflowers from right across Western Australia without having to leave the city. The 17 hectare Kings Park Botanic Gardens feature 3,000 WA plant species, many of which are wildflowers. The Botanic Gardens include sections for regions of Western Australia, so you can see species from different regions across the state.

Be sure to take some time to see the Wittenoom Floral Clock while you are at the Kings Park Botanic Gardens. This stunning feature includes a blanket of many different species of wildflowers, The clock hands were recently given an artistic makeover by local artist Emma Blyth.

Wireless Hill Wildflower Walk Ardross

Distance: 1.3km
Accessibility:
Walk Recommended | Bikes Not Prohibited (however pathway designed for pedestrians) | Suitable for Prams and Wheelchairs
Dogs: Permitted on the Lead
Facilities: Toilets | BBQs | Water Fountain | Historical Landmarks | Free Parking

Not only is this an amazing display of wildflowers, the Wireless Hill Wildflower Walk includes plaques detailing the name, and flowering months of wildflowers right around the walk trail. The walk is close to the carpark and is an easy loop walk. There are additional walks within the park with views of the river and the city as well as historical landmarks and picnic facilities to enjoy.

Piney Lakes Sculpture Walk Winthrop

Distance: Sculpture Trail is approximately 1.5km return, while the full Piney Lakes Wetland Walk is 3.1km
Accessibility:
Walk Recommended | Bikes Allowed (however be mindful of pedestrians) | Suitable for Prams and Wheelchairs
Dogs: Permitted on a lead, however only on sealed pathways (dog exercise area located at eastern end of the reserve near Winthrop Ave). Please observe sign posting.
Facilities: Toilets | BBQs | Water Fountain | Art Works  | Water Features | Free Parking

The Sculpture Walk at the Piney Lakes Reserve Winthrop is best accessed by starting at the Piney Lakes Environmnetal Centre Not only is this a lovely walk to see wildflowers but a bonus art trail experience too. There are more bushy wildflowers on this walk then there are ground level wildflowers, but if you do the full 3.1km wetland walk you’ll see some beautiful wildflower arrangements in the manacured gardens around the lake and another beautiful waterfall feature at the eastern end (Winthorp Ave) also. Bold Park Floreat

Distance: Bold Park offers over 15km of walk trails, with the 5.1km round Zamia Trail connecting most of them.
Accessibility:
Walk Trail | Bikes prohibited at Bold Park (except for Scenic Walk & Scenic Drive) | Suitable for Jogger Prams | Reabold Hill Lookout suitable for prams and wheelchairs.
Dogs: Permitted on a lead (<2m long)
Facilities: nearest toilets and BBQs at Perry Lakes Reserve | Free Parking

Bold Park offers a beautiful range of wildflowers with over 300 native species of plants identified with in the park. While there are lots of trails to choose from, if you are not sure which one to choose, I recommend the Zamia Trail. It takes you right around the park and includes amazing ocean and city views. It’s also connected to the Reabold Hill Lookout Walk which is a must while in the park and a great starting point for the Zamia Trail if you can manage to get parking here. Be sure to take the short detour off the Zamia Trail to the ocean lookout, it’s absolutely worth it. Reabhold Hill Bold Park

Koondoola Regional Bushland Sensory Walk Trail

Distance: 6.4km loop trail, with lots of interconnected trails so you can choose your distance.
Accessibility:
Walk Trail | Bikes Allowed (no going off tracks permitted) | Entrances have swing gates that may make pram and wheelchair access difficult | Sensory Trail (~500m long) is bitumised and features educational plaques, the rest of the trail is compacted limstome and sand.
Dogs: Permitted on a lead
Facilities: Free Parking

Koondoola Regional Bushland is 137ha of bushland that features a short sensory trail at the start (if you access from Koodoonla Ave near Burbidge Ave). You won’t find blankets of wildflowers but there are certainly a large variety to see everywhere you look. There are some elevated sections where you can look out over the bushland and surrounding area.  Seating is located along the trails for somewhere to stop and enjoy a drink and some packed snacks. The trails are all interconnecting, so you may need to use google maps to negotiate your way around as there aren’t any trail markings.
